Celebrating ISD Debrecen’s Commitment to Sustainability

At Compass Education, we are continually inspired by the ways schools use the School Sustainability Self-Assessment to spark meaningful growth and reflection. It is not just a tool for measurement, but a catalyst for dialogue, collaboration, and shared understanding.

Today, I want to celebrate the tremendous work of Crystal Pottenbaum, Tom McLean, and the entire team at the International School of Debrecen (ISD). Their commitment to using the self-assessment as a foundation for developing a whole-school approach to sustainability is both inspiring and deeply aligned with the purpose for which this resource was created. One of the most powerful things we see in schools like ISD is how the self-assessment adapts to meet each community where it is. Some schools use it as an initial exploration, others as a way to reflect on years of experience, but in every case, it opens a space for schools to think more holistically about sustainability. It helps align conversations, build a common language, and strengthen the ability of educators, students, and leaders to move toward a shared vision.

At Compass Education, we are honored to provide this resource free of charge to schools worldwide. For those ready to go deeper, we also offer customized versions of the self-assessment that allow multiple members of a school community to participate and collectively analyze their data. Many schools choose to take this further by working with our professional consulting team to integrate sustainability at every level of their organization.

The work unfolding at ISD Debrecen is a shining example of what can happen when a community embraces systems thinking and commits to learning together. Congratulations to the entire ISD team for your leadership, collaboration, and dedication to meaningful, data-informed sustainability education. Your efforts reflect the very heart of Compass Education’s mission: empowering schools to see the world through a systems lens and act with purpose for a thriving future.
