The portals of sustainability remind practicing schools that<br \/>\n<i>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Leadership and Governance<\/i>,<br \/>\n<i>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Operations and Support Services<\/i>,<br \/>\n<i>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Teaching and Learning<\/i>,<br \/>\n<i>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Buildings and Grounds<\/i> and<br \/>\n<i>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Engagement with the Outside Community<\/i><br \/>\nare five important entry points to infuse sustainable thinking into the system of an educational community.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Traidhos Three-Generation Community for Learning, Prem International School\" href=\"http:\/\/www.threegeneration.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Traidhos Three Generation Community for Learning<\/a>, Chiang Mai, the community which includes <a title=\"Prem Tinsulanonda International School, IB Boarding and Day School in Chiang Mai, Thailand\" href=\"http:\/\/ptis.threegeneration.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prem Tinsulanonda International School<\/a>, recently enabled representatives from across the campus, including accounts, housekeeping, engineering, gardening, operations, the nurse, and administrative staff to live and work together on their\u00a0<a title=\"Traidhos Three Generation Barge Program - Environmental Education\" href=\"http:\/\/barge.threegeneration.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">educational Barge<\/a> as it sailed down the Chao Phraya River from Ayutthaya to Bangkok.<\/p>\n<p>Staff enjoyed visits to new places and the chance to get to know colleagues better \u2013 an important contribution to their well-being \u2013 but also spent time considering ways to increase sustainability using AtKisson Sustainability Compass as a thinking tool. Everyone identified a personal target and departmental targets to work towards on their return to Chiang Mai. We hope that working with staff connected to these two portals will accelerate our progress to becoming more sustainable at all levels of the organization.<\/p>\n<p>Staff identified developing a commitment to being service-minded as central to our community. Linkages were made across the compass point showing the positive contribution service-mindedness has:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Wellbeing (<\/b><span style=\"color: #cc3333;\"><strong>W<\/strong><\/span><b>) \u2013 <\/b>When staff are happy and feel secure and valued they are more willing to support other people happily.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Nature (<span style=\"color: #669966;\">N<\/span>) \u2013 <\/b>Beautiful grounds and good environmental practices make people feel welcome. Increased enrollment increases budget available for grounds development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Economy (<span style=\"color: #666699;\">E<\/span>) \u2013 <\/b>When visitors receive good service and are greeted well, they are more likely to enroll their children, generating more income.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Society (<span style=\"color: #ff9933;\">S<\/span>) \u2013 <\/b>Cooperation between departments strengthens community and creates a positive ethos that people want to be part of.
