SUMMARY:Introduction to the Compass Tools: Systems Thinking for Sustainability in the Classroom (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:This event is a 3-part Introduction to the Compass Tools virtual workshop for individuals or teams of educators\, educational leaders and curriculum specialists from member schools of Tri-Association. \nDates: February 15 and 22\, March 1\, 2023 (5-7 PM USA Eastern Standard Time) \nWorkshop Fee: Free of charge for Tri-Association member schools \nFacilitators: \n\nBritta McCarthy (Assistant Director of Learning at The Columbus School\, Compass Facilitator)\nKaren Virta (K2 English Teacher at the American School of Puerto Vallarta\, Compass Facilitator)\nNicole Swedlow (Executive Director of Compass Education\, Compass Facilitator)\n\nAbout the Workshop\nThis flexible\, three-part program enables schools to efficiently and effectively introduce educators\, administrators and support staff to the fundamentals of sustainability and systems thinking. The process is designed to scaffold learners in systems processes through the introduction of two of the most important and useful systems thinking tools; the Sustainability Compass and Systems Iceberg. The final session supports and encourages participants to put their learning into immediate practice in the design of a lesson or project plan. \nPart 1: Connecting with the Sustainability Compass (2 hours; week #1)\nThis session highlights a tool called the Sustainability Compass which engages us in systems thinking for sustainability – a way of looking at the world that emphasizes interconnectivity and interdependence. We will demonstrate ways\nthat this powerful tool can integrate into your teaching and learning plans to help learners think critically and deeply about the topics they study and our global community. \nPart 2: Deeper Learning with the Systems Iceberg (2 hours; week #2)\nThis session dives deep into using the Iceberg model\, a systems thinking tool designed to evaluate a problem or event by examining the root causes\, underlying structures and mental models that can trigger it. As we deepen our\nunderstanding we can develop new perspectives and more effective and sustainable solutions. \nPart 3: Action Planning and Curriculum Design (2 hours; week #3)\nWe will study examples of curriculum design in a broad range of topics\, age groups and subjects. You will be able to work independently or in small groups to design an action plan or curriculum plan to engage your students in systems thinking. \nREGISTER HERE\n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nDownload Flyer
